Vaisala HM70 Portable Humidity and Temperature Meter – Discontinued

Vaisala HM70 Portable Humidity and Temperature Meter

The Vaisala HM70 was a handheld meter for humidity and temperature spot checks, field measurements, data logging and verification of installed Vaisala instruments. It is discontinued and replaced by the Vaisala Indigo80 handheld indicator with an HMP80 probe.

  • Legacy MI70 handheld indicator with HMP75, HMP76 or HMP77 probe
  • Relative-humidity measurement from 0 to 100 %RH
  • Probe-dependent temperature measurement from −70 to +180 °C
  • Numerical and graphical display with portable data recording
  • Current replacement: Indigo80 with HMP80N or HMP80L
  • HMP80N for general measurements; HMP80L for extended temperature reach

Product status: The Vaisala HM70, MI70 indicator and HMP75/HMP76/HMP77 probe platform are discontinued. For new portable humidity and temperature applications, use the Vaisala Indigo80 with HMP80.

Vaisala HM70 for Existing Portable Humidity Applications

The Vaisala HM70 combined the MI70 handheld indicator with a remote HMP75, HMP76 or HMP77 probe. It was designed for portable relative-humidity and temperature measurement, process spot checks, temporary data recording and field verification of installed humidity transmitters.

HM70 displayed measured and calculated humidity parameters numerically or graphically. Depending on the selected probe, it could be used in ambient conditions, ducts, chambers, industrial processes and high-temperature measurement locations.

Legacy HM70 Probe Options

Legacy probeTemperature rangeConstructionTypical application
HMP75 −20 to +60 °C Short general-purpose probe Ambient measurements, accessible spaces and routine field checks
HMP76 −50 to +120 °C; up to +180 °C for short periods Long stainless-steel probe Ducts, chambers and processes requiring additional insertion reach
HMP77 −70 to +180 °C Cabled probe with a remote sensing section Demanding process locations and high or low temperatures

All three probes measured 0 to 100 %RH. The HM70 platform also provided calculated parameters including dew point, frost point, absolute humidity, mixing ratio, wet-bulb temperature, water-vapour pressure and enthalpy.

Current Replacement: Indigo80 with HMP80

The current portable platform uses the Indigo80 handheld indicator with an HMP80 series humidity and temperature probe. Indigo80 provides the display, two probe connections, data logging, diagnostics and supported field-calibration functions, while the selected HMP80 performs the measurement.

ComponentMain functionSelection guidance
Indigo80 Portable display, two-device connection, data logger, diagnostics and calibration interface Current handheld platform for compatible Vaisala smart probes
HMP80N Humidity and temperature probe with a normal-length sensing section Choose for general spot checks, field calibration and accessible measurement locations
HMP80L Long humidity and temperature probe for a wider process-temperature range Choose when additional insertion reach or more demanding temperature exposure is required

HM70 to HMP80 Probe Migration

Existing HM70 probeCurrent starting pointMigration consideration
HMP75 Indigo80 with HMP80N Suitable starting point for general portable measurements and routine field checks
HMP76 Indigo80 with HMP80L Review insertion length, process opening and maximum continuous temperature
HMP77 Application-specific review The legacy remote sensing geometry is not automatically reproduced by HMP80; check installation access and cable routing

Not necessarily a mechanical drop-in replacement: HMP80 uses different probe dimensions, connection cables and accessories from the HM70 probe family. Confirm the measurement location, insertion depth, cable routing, temperature exposure and field-check method before ordering.

Typical Portable Humidity Measurement Uses

  • Spot-checking relative humidity and temperature in production areas
  • Comparing an installed transmitter against a portable reference
  • Checking ducts, chambers, dryers and controlled environments
  • Temporary trend recording during process investigation
  • Supported field calibration and adjustment of compatible Vaisala instruments
  • Commissioning and troubleshooting humidity measurement points

Using Indigo80 Beyond Humidity Measurement

Indigo80 accepts up to two compatible devices simultaneously. In addition to HMP80 humidity probes, it can be used with selected Vaisala probes and transmitters for dew point, carbon dioxide, vaporised hydrogen peroxide, moisture in oil and other industrial parameters.

This allows one handheld platform to support several field-measurement and diagnostic tasks. Probe compatibility, connection cable and supported calibration functions should still be checked for each device.

Existing HM70 Equipment

A functioning HM70 does not need to be removed solely because the model is discontinued. Keep the indicator, probes, connection cables, calibration certificates, order codes and user documentation together while the system remains in service.

For measurements affecting product quality or compliance, check calibration and repair availability before relying on the legacy system. Replacement planning should consider probe condition, battery condition, accessory availability and the criticality of the measurement.
