The Vaisala DM70 was a portable meter for dew-point spot checks, process measurements and data logging. It is discontinued and replaced for general dew-point work by the Vaisala Indigo80 handheld indicator with a DMP80A or DMP80B probe.
Product status: The Vaisala DM70 and its MI70 handheld platform are discontinued. For current portable dew-point measurements, use the Vaisala Indigo80 handheld indicator with a DMP80A or DMP80B probe selected according to the required dew-point range.
The Vaisala DM70 combined an MI70 handheld indicator with a DMP74 series probe for portable dew-point and temperature measurement. It was used for compressed air, industrial dryers, dry gases, process troubleshooting, field verification of fixed transmitters and moisture measurement in SF₆-insulated electrical equipment.
The probe could be inserted directly into a suitable process connection or connected through a sampling cell. The handheld indicator displayed up to three parameters numerically or graphically and stored readings for later transfer to a computer.
| Legacy probe | Measurement range | Typical use | Operating pressure |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMP74A | −50 to +60 °C Td/f | General-purpose dew point, higher humidity and dryer applications | 0 to 20 bar absolute |
| DMP74B | −70 to +30 °C Td/f | Dry compressed air, dry gases and lower-dew-point applications | 0 to 20 bar absolute |
| DMP74C | −70 to +30 °C Td/f | Moisture measurement in SF₆ gas | 0 to 10 bar absolute |
The current portable platform separates the handheld indicator from the measurement probe. Indigo80 provides the display, data logging, diagnostics and calibration interface, while the selected DMP80 probe performs the dew-point measurement.

The DM70 could be supplied with the DMP74C, a probe specifically developed for moisture measurement in SF₆ gas. The current DMP80 documentation lists air, nitrogen, hydrogen, argon, helium and oxygen as supported measurement gases, but does not explicitly list SF₆.
Do not assume DMP80 is a direct DMP74C replacement for SF₆: confirm the current Vaisala-approved probe, sampling cell, pressure range and gas-recovery arrangement before specifying a replacement. The assessment must also consider applicable safety and environmental requirements for handling SF₆.
For legacy SF₆ measurements, provide the complete DM70 and DMP74C model information, equipment pressure, connector type, expected moisture range and the existing method of recovering or exhausting the sampled gas.
| Method | Advantages | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct process measurement | Fast setup and measurement at actual process pressure | Safe isolation, compatible thread, pressure rating and available probe clearance |
| Sampling cell | Controlled sample flow, convenient isolation and easier connection to different processes | Tubing material, leaks, inlet pressure, outlet restriction and representative gas flow |
| Two-pressure sampling | Supports measurement at process or reduced pressure according to the arrangement | Correct valve sequence, pressure conversion and safe exhaust or gas recovery |
Low-dew-point measurements are sensitive to ambient-air leakage, wet fittings and moisture released from sampling tubing. Use clean compatible tubing, minimise joints and dead volume, and allow the reading to stabilise before recording the result.
Indigo80 can connect to two compatible measurement devices at the same time. In addition to DMP80 portable probes, it can display and service many current Vaisala fixed probes and transmitters for humidity, temperature, dew point, carbon dioxide, vaporised hydrogen peroxide and moisture in oil.
This makes Indigo80 useful for commissioning, comparing an installed probe with a reference, diagnosing a process, recording temporary trends and performing supported field calibration or adjustment.
Retain the DM70 indicator, DMP74 probe, sampling accessories, order codes, calibration certificates and user documentation while the system remains in service. Check calibration and repair availability before relying on a legacy unit for critical quality or compliance measurements.
A functioning DM70 does not need to be removed solely because it is discontinued. Plan replacement according to calibration status, battery and accessory condition, service availability and the importance of the measurement.
Seacom Process Instruments supports existing Vaisala DM70 portable dew point meters in Malaysia and supplies the current Indigo80 and DMP80 platform for compressed air, industrial dryers, dry gases, glove boxes, process troubleshooting and field verification.
Our team can assist with selecting DMP80A or DMP80B, sampling cells, pressure and process connections, Indigo80 configuration, data logging, field-check procedures and calibration planning. Former SF₆ applications will be reviewed separately to confirm a suitable current Vaisala arrangement.
Contact Seacom with your dew-point range, gas type, operating pressure and temperature, process connection, sampling method and calibration requirements so we can recommend an appropriate portable measurement configuration.
