Installation and Pressure Reference
Atmospheric pressure varies with altitude. A local barometer reading may differ from a weather report that presents pressure corrected to sea level. Before comparing readings, confirm the pressure reference and any correction applied.
Install the instrument according to its instructions. For precision measurement, consider pressure disturbances caused by ventilation systems or wind at the sensing location. Protect the instrument from conditions outside its specified operating limits.
Barometric Pressure or Differential Pressure?
Barometric pressure describes atmospheric pressure measured against an absolute reference. Differential pressure describes the difference between two pressure points, such as adjacent rooms or the two sides of a filter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a barometer and a barograph?
A barometer indicates atmospheric pressure. A recording barograph also produces a pressure history, typically by tracing the measurement onto a moving paper chart.
Is a digital barometer always more accurate than an analogue model?
Not automatically. Compare the specified accuracy, measuring range, temperature performance and calibration requirements of the individual instruments. A digital display with more decimal places does not necessarily mean higher accuracy.
Does a barometer with a digital thermometer measure pressure digitally?
Not necessarily. Some instruments combine a mechanical pressure dial with a digital temperature display. Check how each parameter is measured and displayed.
Can a barometer be connected to a data logger?
Yes, if the selected instrument provides an output compatible with the logger. Check the signal type, power supply, wiring and scaling. A mechanical dial barometer does not normally provide an electrical measurement output.
Why does my barometer differ from a weather website?
The two readings may use different pressure references, locations or observation times. Check whether the weather service reports sea-level pressure and whether your instrument displays local atmospheric pressure before considering an adjustment.
