Measurement Instruments for Battery Manufacturing

Battery manufacturing involves several different measurement tasks: checking dry-room conditions, monitoring a drying process, recording cell temperature and measuring the utilities serving production equipment. Selecting the right instrument starts with identifying the actual measurement point.

1. Dry-Room Dew Point Monitoring

Moisture-sensitive battery materials require controlled handling environments. A reading at the dehumidifier outlet tells you about the supply air; measurements inside the room help establish conditions where materials are actually handled.

Product to Consider: Vaisala DMP1

The Vaisala DMP1 dew point and temperature probe is designed for low-humidity environments, including dry rooms in battery manufacturing. It is a strong starting point for monitoring selected locations across a production area.

Example: A battery manufacturer wants to monitor dew point near material-handling and assembly stations. DMP1 probes can be considered as part of a room-monitoring arrangement, with positions established through an assessment of airflow, room layout and process requirements.

The required dew point should come from the battery chemistry and manufacturing specification. One limit should not be assumed suitable for every battery process.

2. Dehumidifier and Dry-Air System Measurement

Dry-room monitoring and dehumidifier control are related, but their sensor locations and operating conditions can differ. A probe installed in a duct or drying unit must suit the conditions at that particular point.

Products to Consider: Vaisala DMP7 and DMP8

Vaisala identifies DMP7 and DMP8 probes, together with Indigo transmitters, among its options for battery dry-room and dehumidifier applications.

Example: A dehumidifier manufacturer needs a dew point signal for its control system. DMP7 can be reviewed where installation space is limited; DMP8 can be reviewed where its process-installation arrangement better suits the equipment.

Confirm the expected dew point, gas temperature, pressure, response requirements and installation accessories before selecting the configuration.

3. Moisture Measurement During Electrode Drying

Electrode drying presents different conditions from a dry room. The measurement may involve hot process gas, changing moisture levels and solvent exposure. The probe must suit both the temperature and the composition of the atmosphere.

Products to Consider: Vaisala DMP5 and DMP6

DMP5 is designed for industrial drying applications at elevated temperatures. DMP6 addresses very-high-temperature drying, using a passive cooling arrangement for the sensor.

Example: An electrode-drying line requires a moisture measurement at a selected dryer stage. DMP5 or DMP6 can be assessed against the actual gas temperature, dew point and chemical exposure.

These probes measure moisture conditions in the process gas. They do not directly measure residual moisture in the electrode material. Any relationship between the gas reading and drying completion must be established through the process-validation method.

Where NMP or other solvents are present, provide their concentrations and operating conditions for a specific compatibility review.

4. Ultra-Dry Gas and Inert-Atmosphere Monitoring

Glove boxes, dry enclosures and selected gas systems may require lower moisture levels than the surrounding facility. The appropriate instrument depends on the required range and the gases or chemicals present.

Product to Consider: Vaisala DMT153

The Vaisala DMT153 is designed for low dew point applications including battery manufacturing and pure-gas systems. Its specified dew/frost-point measurement range is −80 to −20 °C.

Example: An equipment builder needs to monitor dry nitrogen supplied to a moisture-sensitive enclosure. DMT153 is a candidate where the target range, pressure and gas composition meet its specifications.

A dew point reading indicates moisture conditions at the sensor. It does not measure oxygen concentration or establish every aspect of an inert atmosphere.

5. Recording Battery-Cell Temperature During Activation

During cell activation and associated charging operations, engineers may need to compare temperatures at several locations over time. A multi-channel logger provides a different type of information from a single spot check.

Products to Consider: Anritsu AM-9000 and ST Flat-Leaf Probes

Anritsu documents battery-cell activation measurement using its AM-9000 compact thermologger with ST-series flat-leaf probes. Its application example identifies the ST-11K-010-TS1-ANP probe.

Example: An engineer wants to compare temperature behaviour across several cells during an evaluation cycle. Appropriately installed flat-leaf probes and a compatible AM-9000 configuration allow readings to be recorded on a common time basis.

Confirm channel count, thermocouple compatibility, probe temperature limits, attachment method and electrical isolation requirements. Surface readings should not automatically be interpreted as internal cell temperatures.

6. Barometric and Differential Pressure Measurement

Pressure requirements should identify the reference: ambient absolute pressure, pressure relative to another room, or process vacuum. These are different measurements.

Ambient Pressure: Indigo520 with Barometer Module

The Vaisala Indigo520 has an optional barometric-pressure module with an absolute-pressure range of 500–1100 hPa.

Example: A laboratory or production-monitoring specification requires ambient pressure to be recorded alongside humidity or dew point. An appropriately configured Indigo520 can be considered for that requirement.

The barometer is not a substitute for a room differential-pressure transmitter or an instrument selected for deep-vacuum drying.

Room Pressure Difference: Vaisala PDT101

Where the requirement is to monitor pressure between a controlled room and an adjoining space, a Vaisala PDT101 differential-pressure transmitter is a candidate, subject to the required measuring range and installation conditions.

7. Cooling-Water Flow Measurement

Factory utilities are another part of the measurement requirement. A cooling-water circuit serving production equipment should be assessed separately from electrolyte, slurry or solvent-handling systems.

Product to Consider: Badger Meter ModMAG M2000

The Badger M2000 electromagnetic flowmeter is a candidate for compatible, conductive cooling and utility water.

Example: A facilities team needs a flow signal from a cooling-water branch for plant monitoring. The M2000 can be reviewed against the flow range, pipework and required communication interface.

Badger specifies minimum conductivity of 5 µS/cm, or 20 µS/cm for demineralised water. Confirm water chemistry, materials, full-pipe conditions and installation requirements. Do not assume suitability for ultrapure water, battery electrolyte or electrode slurry.

8. Continuous Monitoring, Records and Alarms

A local display may be sufficient for an occasional check. Where several locations require continuous records and notifications, the project needs a monitoring-system design as well as suitable sensors.

Confirm the proposed device connections before specifying the system. Monitoring and recording should also be distinguished from the equipment’s process-control and protective functions.
