Vaisala DMP5 Dew Point and Temperature Probe

The Vaisala DMP5 is designed for direct in-line humidity and temperature measurement in hot industrial processes. Its long stainless-steel sensing probe and optional installation flange provide adjustable insertion depth, allowing the measurement point to reach through insulation and thick oven or dryer walls.

Direct process installation avoids the delay and potential measurement errors associated with extracting and conditioning a sample. The DMP5 is suitable for process temperatures up to +180 °C and provides its strongest measurement performance in hot and dry conditions up to approximately +140 °C.

Why Choose the DMP5?

  • Direct measurement up to +180 °C: install the probe in the process instead of using a separate sampling and conditioning system.
  • Long adjustable probe: reach through insulation and position the sensing head at a representative depth inside an oven, dryer or duct.
  • Wide dew point range: measure from −40 to +100 °C Td/f across dry and moisture-rich process conditions.
  • Stable DRYCAP performance: automatic calibration and sensor purge help maintain accuracy and chemical resistance.
  • Industrial durability: the sensor tolerates condensation, oil, dust and most chemicals encountered in process environments.
  • Flexible connectivity: use the probe through Modbus RTU, an Indigo transmitter, Indigo80 or Vaisala Insight software.

Direct Measurement in Hot Processes

The probe can be inserted directly into an oven, dryer or process duct. Its length allows the sensing head to extend beyond insulation and boundary layers into the representative process gas. An optional mounting flange allows the insertion depth to be adjusted during installation.

Temperature note: the DMP5 can operate safely up to +180 °C, while its best dry-end measurement performance is achieved at process temperatures up to approximately +140 °C. Confirm the actual temperature and dew point combination before selection.

Fixed or Portable Measurement

Permanent Process Installation

The DMP5 can connect directly to an automation or monitoring system using Modbus RTU. Where a permanent display, analogue output, relay or Ethernet connection is required, pair it with a compatible Vaisala Indigo transmitter.

Portable Use with Indigo80

Connect the DMP5 to the Vaisala Indigo80 handheld indicator for portable display, data logging, diagnostics, probe configuration and field calibration. Indigo80 can also use temperature from a second compatible probe when an external temperature-compensation value is required.

Portable-use note: Indigo80 makes the display and service functions portable; the DMP5 normally remains mechanically installed for continuous high-temperature process measurement. DMP80 is a separate handheld probe designed specifically for portable dew point spot checks.

The DMP5 also works with Vaisala Insight PC software for configuration, diagnostics, temporary online monitoring and calibration support.

Typical Applications

  • Industrial drying ovens and chambers
  • Baking and food-processing equipment
  • Ceramics, timber and building-material dryers
  • Paper and pulp drying processes
  • Coating, curing and heat-treatment processes
  • Other hot ducts and process equipment requiring direct humidity measurement

Installation and Ordering Considerations

Before ordering, confirm the normal and maximum process temperatures, expected dew point, gas velocity, duct or oven-wall construction, insulation thickness, required insertion depth, mounting arrangement and electrical output.

Position the sensing head in representative process gas and away from stagnant pockets, direct product contact, condensate accumulation and locations exposed to mechanical impact. Allow sufficient external clearance for the probe body, cable and future service access.

Vaisala DMP Series Comparison

Choose the DMP probe according to the installation environment, process temperature, pressure and required dew point range.

ModelBest suited toDew point rangeTemperature or pressure limitInstallation
DMP1 Dry rooms, battery production and semiconductor manufacturing −70 to +80 °C Td/f Probe operating temperature −40 to +80 °C Compact fixed probe for distributed room monitoring
DMP5 Hot industrial dryers, ovens and process ducts −40 to +100 °C Td/f Process temperature up to +180 °C Long direct-insertion probe with adjustable mounting depth
DMP6 Very-high-temperature dryers, ovens and industrial processes −25 to +100 °C Td/f Direct process measurement from +100 to +350 °C Direct-insertion probe with a dedicated passive cooling set
DMP7 Tight spaces, compact equipment, dry gas and compressed air −70 to +80 °C Td/f Process pressure up to 10 bar Short 41 mm sensing head with pressure-tight fitting
DMP8 Pressurised compressed-air and industrial-gas pipelines −70 to +80 °C Td/f Process pressure up to 40 bar absolute Adjustable insertion depth with optional ball-valve installation

Quick selection: choose DMP1 for distributed dry-room monitoring, DMP5 for processes up to +180 °C, DMP6 for very hot processes up to +350 °C, DMP7 when installation space is limited, and DMP8 for pressurised pipelines up to 40 bar.

All five probes support Modbus RTU, compatible Vaisala Indigo transmitters, the Indigo80 handheld indicator and Vaisala Insight software. The final selection should also consider process gas, flow velocity, mounting access, required outputs and calibration arrangements.
