What Is Pressure Dew Point?

Dew point is the temperature at which water vapour begins to condense as air is cooled. Pressure dew point (PDP) expresses this condition at the pressure where the measurement is made. Always record the measurement pressure alongside the dew point when comparing results.

Air sampled after pressure reduction will have a different dew point from air measured at line pressure. A lower reading after expansion does not, by itself, mean the dryer has removed more moisture. Compare measurements at the same pressure or use an appropriate pressure conversion.

Choosing a Dew Point Transmitter for Your Dryer

Start with the dew point your process requires and the conditions your dryer is designed to achieve. Check measurement accuracy around that operating point, as well as the instrument's full range.

  • Refrigerated dryers: choose an instrument intended for the comparatively higher dew points associated with refrigeration drying. The Vaisala DMT132 is designed for checking refrigerant dryer performance.
  • Desiccant dryers: select a sensor suited to the lower moisture levels required by the application. Include the expected operating range and possible wet excursions when specifying the instrument.
  • Ultra-dry processes: assess a dedicated low dew point sensor such as the DMT153 when the required dryness goes beyond the intended operating region of a general dryer-monitoring instrument.

Also confirm pressure and temperature limits, process connection, supply voltage and the signal required by the receiving equipment. Model names alone are not enough to specify a complete installation.

Fixed Transmitter or Portable Dew Point Meter?

A fixed dew point transmitter is appropriate when you need readings throughout production. Its signal can feed a compatible monitoring or control system for trending and configured alarms.

A portable dew point meter for compressed air is useful when checking several locations with one measurement system. The Indigo80 with a DMP80 probe supports field measurements and data logging. Choose a suitable sampling cell or approved direct connection for each measuring point.

Portable checks help investigate a particular condition, but they only describe the period measured. Where a process needs continuous oversight, specify permanent monitoring and use portable measurements as a supporting maintenance tool.

Installation and Sampling Considerations

  • Choose a representative location: identify whether you need to assess an individual dryer outlet, a shared header or air delivered to a particular process.
  • Maintain the intended measurement pressure: avoid an unintended pressure drop before the sensor when checking pressure dew point.
  • Keep sampling connections leak-tight: even small leaks can affect very dry measurements.
  • Use suitable tubing: short stainless-steel sample lines help reduce moisture exchange and response delays.
  • Avoid condensation in the sample line: cooling the sample below its dew point changes the moisture reaching the instrument.
  • Allow the reading to stabilise: purge the sampling arrangement with process gas and follow the instrument's flow and installation instructions.

Use fittings and sampling equipment rated for the process pressure and temperature. Follow the manufacturer's procedure for installing or removing equipment from a pressurised line.

Questions to Answer Before Selecting a Dew Point Meter

  • Is the dryer refrigerated or desiccant, and what dew point must it deliver?
  • What are the normal and maximum pressure and temperature at the measuring point?
  • Will the reading be taken at line pressure or after pressure reduction?
  • Do you need continuous monitoring, portable checks or both?
  • Which output, display, logging function and process connection are required?
