Badger Meter ModMAG M2000 Electromagnetic Flow Meter

Badger Meter ModMAG M2000 Magmeter

The Badger Meter ModMAG M2000 measures conductive liquid flow, with applications in data centre chilled-water and cooling-water systems. Communication options support integration with building and plant monitoring systems.

  • Flow velocity range: 0.03–12 m/s
  • Accuracy: ±0.20% of reading ±1 mm/s with suitable straight pipe
  • Integral or remote transmitter arrangements
  • BACnet, Modbus and other communication options
  • Zero-straight-run capability subject to specified conditions

Badger M2000 Flow Meter for Data Centre Cooling Systems

Cooling-water flow is an important part of understanding how a data centre cooling system is performing. The Badger Meter ModMAG M2000 electromagnetic flow meter provides flow measurement for conductive liquids and can be considered for chilled-water and cooling-water circuits.

For a new installation or replacement project, Seacom can review the required flow range, pipework and communication requirements to help identify a suitable configuration.

Applications in Data Centre Cooling

  • Chilled-water distribution: Monitor flow through selected headers and branches serving cooling equipment.
  • Cooling-water circuits: Assess flow measurement requirements around chillers, heat exchangers and associated pipework.
  • Commissioning and operation: Use measured flow alongside temperature and equipment data when assessing cooling-system performance.
  • Central monitoring: Specify the required interface for connection to the building management or plant control system.

BACnet and Modbus Communication Options

The M2000 provides standard RS232 Modbus RTU communication. Optional interfaces include RS485 Modbus RTU, BACnet MS/TP, BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, EtherNet/IP, HART and Profibus DP. These options require the appropriate communication daughterboard.

Include the required protocol in your enquiry so the meter configuration can be checked against your BMS or controls specification.

Key Technical Details

  • Measuring principle: Electromagnetic
  • Flow velocity: 0.03–12 m/s
  • Standard accuracy: ±0.20% of reading ±1 mm/s, with appropriate straight pipe
  • Conductivity: Minimum 5 µS/cm; minimum 20 µS/cm for demineralised water
  • Mounting: Meter-mounted or remote transmitter
  • Outputs: Programmable analogue and digital outputs
  • Functions: Bidirectional measurement, totalisation and empty-pipe detection

Installation Space and Straight-Pipe Requirements

Badger’s referenced data sheet specifies 3–7 pipe diameters upstream and 2 downstream for optimum performance. It also lists zero-straight-run performance of ±1% for DN50–DN800 at velocities of at least 0.15 m/s, under the stated OIML/MID conditions. Confirm applicability to the proposed installation.

Check the Cooling Fluid Before Selecting a Magmeter

Confirm fluid conductivity and wetted-material compatibility. Do not assume suitability for ultrapure water, dielectric coolant or a water/glycol mixture without checking its properties. The meter must operate with a full pipe and suitable grounding.

Flow Measurement and Cooling Energy

Flow is one input to cooling-energy measurement. A complete calculation also needs supply and return temperatures, fluid properties and suitable calculation equipment. The M2000 alone should not be specified as a complete thermal-energy metering system.
