SPI Positive Displacement Flowmeter MG Series SPI Positive Displacement Flowmeter MG Series

SPI MG Series Oval Gear Flowmeter for Liquids

The SPI MG Series oval gear flowmeter measures liquid volume using positive displacement technology. Pulse signals can be connected to a compatible indicator, PLC or batch controller.

  • Direct volumetric measurement of compatible clean liquids
  • Measurement principle does not depend on liquid conductivity
  • Pulse output for remote counting and control applications
  • Display and controller options to suit the installation
  • Batch measurement when paired with a suitable control system

SPI MG Series Oval Gear Flowmeter

The SPI MG Series is a positive displacement flowmeter for measuring the volume of compatible clean liquids. It uses two oval gears inside a measuring chamber to divide the passing liquid into repeatable volumes.

The meter can form part of a liquid transfer, totalising or batching arrangement. Seacom helps select the meter and associated indication or control equipment according to the liquid, operating conditions and required measurement functions.

How Oval Gear Measurement Works

Liquid passing through the measuring chamber rotates the oval gears. Each rotation corresponds to a defined displaced volume. Magnets within the rotors allow the rotation to be detected and converted into pulse signals.

A compatible indicator or control system counts these pulses using the meter's calibration factor. Depending on the connected equipment, the signals can be used for volume totalisation, flow-rate indication or batch measurement.

Measurement and Integration Features

  • Positive displacement measurement — measures liquid volume through the movement of the oval gears.
  • Independent of electrical conductivity — the measuring principle does not require the liquid to be electrically conductive.
  • Pulse signal integration — connect to a compatible remote display, counter, PLC or batch controller.
  • Indication options — select the available display or output arrangement according to the information needed locally and remotely.
  • Compact installation potential — oval gear measurement does not rely on the developed flow profile required by some other measuring technologies. Follow the selected meter's installation instructions.

Selecting the Right Meter

Select the meter for the actual operating conditions rather than pipe size alone. Liquid viscosity, temperature, pressure and material compatibility must be reviewed together with the required flow range.

Selection pointInformation to provide
Liquid Liquid name, composition and any solids or entrained air. Include a safety data sheet where available.
Flow range Minimum, normal and maximum operating flow, including intermittent or batch operation.
Viscosity Viscosity at the actual operating temperature, including changes between start-up and normal operation.
Pressure and temperature Normal and maximum conditions, together with the pressure drop available across the meter.
Materials and connections Required wetted-material compatibility, pipe size and connection type.
Output and indication Local display, pulse counting, PLC connection or batch-controller requirements.
Batch operation Target batch volume, required repeatability and the pump or valve arrangement to be controlled.

Batch Measurement and Pump Control

When connected to a suitable batch controller, the flowmeter provides the measurement pulses used to track the transferred volume. The controller can then issue a stop command to the connected pump-control or valve-control circuit when the programmed quantity is reached.

The complete arrangement must account for pump stopping time, valve response and liquid remaining in the delivery line. The flowmeter provides the measurement signal; switching and control functions depend on the selected controller and wiring.

Installation Considerations

  • Liquid cleanliness: review filtration requirements to protect the measuring gears from particles and debris.
  • Air in the line: keep the meter filled with liquid and address entrained air that could affect volume measurement.
  • Flow and pressure limits: confirm the selected model's ratings and avoid operating outside its specified conditions.
  • Signal compatibility: match the pulse output, power supply and controller input requirements before wiring.
  • Commissioning: check flow direction, mounting orientation, calibration factor and indicated volume before routine operation.
