Vaisala HM40 Portable Humidity and Temperature Meter

The Vaisala HUMICAP HM40 Series is a family of compact handheld humidity and temperature meters designed for quick inspections, environmental spot checks and field verification.

Four probe configurations are available for different measurement locations. The HM41 is the general-purpose model, the HM42 uses a thin probe for narrow spaces, the HM45 provides a remote probe with a handle, and the rugged HM46 uses a long stainless-steel probe for ducts, demanding locations and short-term high-temperature measurement.

All HM40 models measure relative humidity and temperature and calculate dew point, wet-bulb temperature, absolute humidity, mixing ratio and enthalpy. Numerical, statistical and graphical views help users confirm that measurements have stabilised before saving a reading.

HM40 for HVAC Inspection and Commissioning

The HM40 provides an independent portable reference for investigating indoor conditions and checking installed HVAC sensors.

  • Verify room temperature and humidity during commissioning
  • Compare wall or duct transmitter readings with a portable reference
  • Investigate hot, cold, dry or humid complaints
  • Check supply-air and return-air conditions
  • Confirm measurement stability before recording the result
  • Support preventive-maintenance inspections

Construction and Structural-Moisture Applications

Humidity and temperature affect the drying of concrete, coatings, paint, adhesives and flooring systems. The HM40 supports environmental spot checking during construction and renovation.

  • HM41: General room-condition checks during drying and finishing work.
  • HM42: Measurement in narrow gaps, joints and beneath flooring.
  • HM45: Remote measurement where the indicator cannot be positioned beside the sensing point.
  • HM46: Rugged insertion measurements in demanding or difficult-to-reach locations.

The HM40 measures air humidity at the probe location. A complete structural-moisture assessment must follow the appropriate measurement method, required equilibration time and applicable construction standard.

Industrial, Laboratory and Storage Applications

  • Industrial Production: Spot checks around production processes, drying areas and controlled workspaces.
  • Laboratories: Verification of temperature and humidity in research, test and calibration areas.
  • Life-Science Facilities: Routine environmental inspections in controlled rooms and storage areas.
  • Warehouses: Checks for conditions that may contribute to corrosion, mould, packaging damage or material degradation.
  • Museums and Archives: Environmental checks around sensitive artworks, documents and stored collections.
  • Ventilation Ducts: HM46 insertion measurements in supply-air and return-air systems.

Calibration and Maintenance

The HM40 probe and indicator can be sent to an authorised service facility for calibration. Users can also perform an on-site one-point or two-point adjustment using an appropriate humidity reference.

  • Reference Comparison: Compare the HM40 against another suitable calibrated reference instrument.
  • Salt-Chamber Calibration: Use the Vaisala HMK15 Humidity Calibrator to generate known humidity reference environments.
  • One- or Two-Point Adjustment: Apply an adjustment through the HM40 calibration menu.
  • Replaceable Filters: Select the appropriate replacement filter for the probe and application.
  • Interchangeable HMP113: HM41 and HM45 use a replaceable HMP113 measurement probe.
