Vaisala DL4000 Universal Input Data Logger

Product lifecycle notice: The DL4000 is scheduled for future discontinuation. Confirm product availability before specifying it for a new project. For new analog-input monitoring systems, consider the Vaisala VDL200 with ANP115 analog input probe.

The Vaisala DL4000 records standard current or voltage signals from industrial transmitters and sensors. It allows measurements such as differential pressure, flow, fluid level, pH, electrical properties, moisture and gas concentration to be monitored alongside temperature and humidity within a Vaisala viewLinc system.

The logger is available with one, two or four channels. Separate models accept 0–20 mA, 0–5 V DC or 0–10 V DC inputs. Each channel can be scaled in engineering units so users see the actual process value rather than the raw electrical signal.

Connected to the Vaisala viewLinc Continuous Monitoring System, the DL4000 provides historical and real-time data, remote alarms and controlled reporting. It can also be used with Vaisala vLog for standalone graphing and reporting.

Closest Substitute: VDL200 with ANP115

The closest current substitute for many DL4000 applications is the Vaisala VDL200 PoE Data Logger used with an ANP115 analog input probe. The ANP115 allows a compatible current or voltage signal to be incorporated into the current viewLinc platform.

ConsiderationDL4000VDL200 with ANP115
Product generation Legacy DL-series platform approaching phase-out Current-generation viewLinc platform
Input purpose Records standard current or voltage signals ANP115 connects compatible analog signals to VDL200
Channel arrangement Dedicated 1-, 2- or 4-channel model Configuration depends on the VDL200 probe and input arrangement
Network connection RS-232 with optional USB, Ethernet, PoE or Wi-Fi interface Native Ethernet and Power over Ethernet
Migration requirement Existing configuration may remain in service Signal range, scaling, wiring, power and viewLinc compatibility must be reviewed
Not always a direct one-for-one replacement: A DL4000 can provide up to four dedicated analog channels. Confirm the number of signals, input ranges, transmitter power requirements and network arrangement before migrating to VDL200 and ANP115.

What Can the DL4000 Monitor?

The DL4000 does not measure the physical parameter directly. It records the standard electrical output from a compatible transmitter, then converts that signal into the required engineering range.

  • Differential pressure: Cleanrooms, isolation rooms, filters and air-handling systems.
  • Flow: Liquid, gas or air flow transmitters with a compatible analog output.
  • Level: Tanks, vessels and storage systems.
  • Gas concentration: Fixed transmitters for CO₂ or other process gases.
  • Moisture and dew point: Transmitters monitoring compressed air, oils or industrial gases.
  • Electrical and process values: Conductivity, pH, particles and other parameters converted to a standard analog signal.

Choosing the Correct Input Model

DL4000 ModelInput RangeUse When the Transmitter Output Is
4000-405 0–5 V DC 0–5 V
4000-40A 0–10 V DC 0–10 V
4000-40C 0–20 mA 0–20 mA or a compatible scaled current signal
Check before ordering: The DL4000 model is factory-configured for one input type. Confirm the transmitter output, number of channels, scaling range, engineering unit and power arrangement before selecting the model code.

How Signal Scaling Works

Each channel is configured with the transmitter’s electrical and measurement ranges. For example, a differential-pressure transmitter scaled from 0 to 100 Pa with a 0–10 V output can be displayed, alarmed and reported by viewLinc directly in pascals.

Configuration ItemExample
Input signal 0–10 V DC
Transmitter range 0–100 Pa
Engineering unit Pa
Displayed result The actual differential-pressure value rather than the raw voltage
Alarm limits Configured in viewLinc using the scaled engineering value

Recording at the Measurement Point

  • Network-independent recording: Measurements continue to be stored if network communication is interrupted.
  • Battery-backed operation: The internal battery supports autonomous logging during a mains-power interruption.
  • Gap-free records: Stored data can be transferred to viewLinc after communication is restored.
  • Flexible recording intervals: Sampling can be selected from once every 10 seconds to once per day.
  • Controlled memory behaviour: Choose FIFO wrap mode or stop recording when memory is full.
