Vaisala DL1000, DL1400, DL1016 and DL1416 Temperature Data Loggers

Product lifecycle notice: The DL1000, DL1400, DL1016 and DL1416 series are scheduled for future discontinuation. Confirm availability before specifying them for a new project. For new continuous-monitoring systems, consider the Vaisala VDL200 with suitable smart probes.

The Vaisala DL1000 and DL1400 series are precision temperature data loggers for continuous monitoring and validation work. Available with two or four channels and a choice of internal or external sensors, they can cover applications ranging from warehouses and incubators to ultra-low-temperature freezers.

The DL1016 and DL1416 are the external-probe configurations. The DL1016 provides two external channels, while the DL1416 provides four, allowing one logger to monitor several cabinets, chambers or measurement positions.

When connected to the Vaisala viewLinc Continuous Monitoring System, the loggers provide historical and real-time data, remote alarms and controlled reporting. They can also be used with Vaisala vLog for validation and mapping.

At a GlanceDL1000–DL1416 Series
Channel configurations 2 or 4 channels, depending on model
External-probe calibrated ranges −25 to +70 °C with N-range probes; −90 to −40 °C with V-range probes
Recording Autonomous onboard memory with user-selectable sampling intervals
Power Internal lithium battery with a typical 10-year life at intervals of one minute or longer

Current Replacement Platform: Vaisala VDL200

The Vaisala VDL200 is the current replacement platform for many DL1000, DL1400, DL1016 and DL1416 continuous-monitoring applications. It uses interchangeable smart probes and a native Ethernet or Power over Ethernet connection to the viewLinc system.

ConsiderationLegacy DL1000–DL1416 SeriesCurrent VDL200 Platform
Product generation DL-series platform approaching phase-out Current-generation viewLinc data logger
Measurement arrangement Internal or fixed channel-specific temperature configuration Interchangeable smart probes selected for the application
Channels Two- or four-channel configurations Up to two probe ports and multiple recorded parameters, depending on probe selection
Network connection RS-232 with optional USB, Ethernet, PoE or Wi-Fi interface Native Ethernet and Power over Ethernet with battery backup
Migration requirement Existing systems may remain in service Probe range, channel quantity, cabling, network and viewLinc compatibility must be checked
Not always a direct one-for-one replacement: DL1416 installations may use four external temperature channels, while one VDL200 has two probe ports. Confirm the number of measurement points and required temperature range when planning the migration.

Choosing the Correct Logger

Model FamilyConfigurationSuitable Applications
DL1000 Two-channel platform with internal and external sensor configurations Single cabinets, rooms and equipment requiring one or two measurement points
DL1400 Four-channel platform with internal and external sensor configurations Several measurement points located close together
DL1016 Two external V-range temperature channels Two freezers, refrigerators or external probe positions
DL1416 Four external V-range temperature channels Multi-application monitoring or mapping with up to four probes
Model selection: The exact channel arrangement, probe range and VL or SP software configuration must be confirmed when ordering. Seacom can check the complete model code against the application.

Temperature Probe Options

Sensor OptionCalibrated RangeTypical Application
Internal sensor −25 to +70 °C Rooms, warehouses and chambers where the complete logger can be installed at the measurement point
N-range external probe −25 to +70 °C Refrigerators, incubators and general temperature monitoring
V-range external probe −90 to −40 °C Ultra-low-temperature freezers and other low-temperature equipment

External probes are calibrated with their assigned logger channel. Keep each probe paired with the correct channel to maintain the stated system accuracy.

Why Record at the Measurement Point?

  • Protection from network interruptions: Measurements continue to be stored in the logger if the network connection is interrupted.
  • Protection from mains-power failures: The internal battery allows autonomous recording without relying on local AC power.
  • Gap-free records: Stored measurements can be transferred to viewLinc when communication is restored.
  • Long recording periods: Sampling intervals can be adjusted according to the monitoring or mapping requirement.

Typical Applications

  • Ultra-low-temperature freezers: External V-range probes provide calibrated measurement down to −90 °C.
  • Refrigerators and freezers: External probes allow the logger body to remain outside the cabinet.
  • Incubators: Stable temperature monitoring with traceable calibration.
  • Cold rooms and warehouses: Continuous recording, alarming and reporting through viewLinc.
  • Validation and mapping: Two- or four-channel configurations reduce the number of loggers needed for a study.
  • Door monitoring: Selected configurations support Boolean inputs for a door switch or alarm contact.

viewLinc and vLog Software

SoftwarePurpose
viewLinc Enterprise Server Continuous monitoring, remote alarms, audit trails, access control and reporting
vLog VL Validation and mapping for GxP-regulated applications
vLog SP Graphing and reporting for non-GxP applications
OPC integration Makes compatible live or historical monitoring data available to third-party systems

The complete viewLinc system can support records and workflows designed to meet FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and EU GMP Annex 11 requirements. Compliance depends on the complete system configuration, validation and operating procedures.
