The Sato SK-8950 is a handheld infrared thermometer for non-contact surface temperature checks from −60 to 550°C. Its circular laser marker helps with aiming, while adjustable emissivity allows the setting to be matched to the material being measured.

It is a practical option for comparing surface temperatures during maintenance, production checks and heating or cooling investigations. The IP54 enclosure provides protection against dust ingress and water splashes for everyday industrial handling.

Understanding the 12:1 Distance-to-Spot Ratio

The thermometer measures an area rather than a single point. As the distance increases, the measurement area becomes larger. At a distance of approximately 600 mm, the spot diameter is approximately 50 mm.

Keep the target larger than the measuring spot so surrounding surfaces do not contribute unwanted temperature information. Sato defines the spot using the area receiving 90% of the target’s emitted energy.

Circular Laser Marker and Measurement Area

The laser circle is an aiming guide. Sato specifies that the laser circle and actual measuring area coincide at a measurement distance of 2,000 mm. At other distances, allow for the difference between the laser indication and the infrared measuring area.

Getting Useful Surface Temperature Readings

  • Match the emissivity: use a setting appropriate to the target surface. Reflective metal surfaces can be affected by surrounding thermal radiation.
  • Check the target size: move closer when measuring small objects so the target fills the measurement area.
  • Measure the exposed surface: ordinary glass prevents this thermometer from reading the object behind it; it detects the glass surface instead.
  • Allow temperature stabilisation: when moving between environments with a temperature difference of 10°C or more, the manual specifies at least 30 minutes for the instrument to acclimatise.
  • Use a probe for internal temperature: an infrared reading represents the surface. Use an appropriate contact probe when the required measurement is inside a liquid, food item or material.

Alarms and Display Functions

Set upper and lower limits to receive a buzzer alert when a reading moves outside the selected limits. MAX and MIN show the extremes during measurement, AVG displays the average, and DIF shows the difference between maximum and minimum readings.

Automatic measurement mode allows continuous operation without holding the trigger. During normal trigger operation, the last reading remains on screen for one minute after release before automatic power-off.

Water Protection and Handling

The IP54 rating supports use with wet hands and protection from splashes; it is not an immersion rating. Keep the optical window clean and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. The Class II laser must not be directed at anyone’s eyes.

The SK-8950 is an industrial surface thermometer and is not intended for clinical body-temperature measurement.
