Vaisala MM70 Portable Moisture in Oil Meter – Discontinued

Vaisala MM70 Portable Moisture in Oil Meter – Discontinued

The Vaisala MM70 was a portable meter for spot-checking water activity and temperature in transformer, lubrication and hydraulic oils.

  • Discontinued product; not recommended for new purchases
  • Legacy MI70 handheld indicator with MMP78 moisture-in-oil probe
  • Water-activity measurement from 0 to 1 aw
  • Temperature measurement from −40 to +100 °C
  • Direct insertion through a ball valve without draining the process
  • Numerical display, trend graph and portable data logging

Legacy Portable Moisture-in-Oil Measurement

The Vaisala MM70 combined the MI70 handheld indicator with the MMP78 probe for portable measurement of dissolved moisture and temperature in oil. It was commonly used for spot checks, process comparisons, oil-condition investigations and verification of permanently installed moisture transmitters.

The long adjustable probe could be installed through a ball valve, allowing measurements directly in a pressurised oil line without draining the process. Measurements could be viewed numerically or graphically and recorded in the MI70 indicator for transfer to a PC.

Discontinued model: Vaisala has replaced MM70 with the Indigo80 handheld indicator and MMP8 moisture-in-oil probe. Existing MM70 systems may remain useful, but MMP78 probe, MI70 accessory and service availability should be confirmed before further investment.

What MM70 Measured

ParameterMeaningApplication value
Water activity, aw Relative indication of dissolved moisture from 0 to 1 Shows how close the oil is to saturation and the risk of free-water formation
Relative saturation, %RS Water activity expressed from 0 to 100% Provides an intuitive saturation-based moisture trend
Temperature Oil temperature at the measurement point Needed because the water-holding capacity of oil changes with temperature
Water concentration, ppmw Calculated mass concentration using oil-specific solubility information Useful where specifications and historical records are expressed in ppm

Typical Oil Applications

Oil or systemMeasurement objectiveImportant consideration
Transformer oil Track dissolved moisture and free-water risk Use suitable ppmw coefficients where mass concentration is required
Lubricating oil Detect water ingress and support oil-condition decisions Trend water activity together with oil temperature and operating state
Hydraulic fluid Identify moisture loading that may affect fluid and component life Choose a representative pressurised-line measurement point
Oil purification or drying Verify moisture removal and process endpoint Measure before and after treatment under comparable conditions
Marine and rotating equipment Investigate ingress and changes during operation Consider vibration, access, pressure and installation safety

Understanding Water Activity and ppm

Water activity directly indicates the proximity of the oil to saturation. A value approaching 1 aw means the oil is approaching the point where free water may form at the measured temperature. Because saturation changes with temperature and oil condition, water activity is particularly useful for assessing immediate moisture risk.

A ppmw value estimates the mass concentration of water in oil. The conversion depends on oil solubility behaviour, so the correct oil-specific coefficients should be used where accurate ppm values are required. Indigo80 or Vaisala Insight can be used to configure suitable coefficients for MMP8.

Existing MM70 Migration Checks

  1. Record the MI70 indicator, MMP78 probe, fitting, ball valve and cable item codes.
  2. Confirm the oil type, normal temperature, pressure and flow at the measurement point.
  3. Record the required insertion depth and available clearance around the valve.
  4. Confirm whether water activity, relative saturation, temperature or ppmw is required.
  5. Review any oil-specific ppm coefficients used with the legacy instrument.
  6. Select the standard or long MMP8 and the correct process fitting.
  7. Do not assume every MM70 fitting or accessory transfers directly to MMP8.
  8. Compare the old and new instruments at the same stable oil condition before retiring MM70.

Vaisala MM70 Replacement Support in Malaysia

Seacom Process Instruments supports users of the discontinued Vaisala MM70 Portable Moisture in Oil Meter in Malaysia and supplies the Indigo80 handheld indicator with MMP8 probe for new portable moisture-in-oil applications.

Our team can assist with probe-length selection, process fittings, ball-valve installation, oil-specific ppm coefficients, portable data logging, fixed Indigo transmitter options, commissioning and calibration planning.

Replacing an MM70? Send Seacom photographs of the MI70, MMP78 label, process fitting and ball valve, together with the oil type, temperature, pressure, insertion depth and required measurement parameters. We will help check the suitable Indigo80 and MMP8 configuration.
